Nike began as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964, founded by University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and his former student Phil Knight. Initially, they distributed Japanese running shoes from Onitsuka Tiger. In 1971, they rebranded as Nike, named after the Greek goddess of victory, and introduced the now-iconic Swoosh logo, designed by Carolyn Davidson. The company's first major breakthrough came with the release of the Nike Cortez in 1972, a shoe that combined comfort and durability, quickly becoming a staple for runners. However, it was the launch of the Air Jordan line in 1985, in collaboration with basketball legend Michael Jordan, that propelled Nike into a global phenomenon. Today, Nike sponsors a diverse roster of athletes, including Serena Williams, LeBron James, and Eliud Kipchoge, reflecting its dedication to excellence across disciplines. The company's influence extends beyond sports, impacting music, fashion, and street culture, solidifying its status as a global lifestyle brand.
